Employee Spotlight: What Pride Means at Neon

As we celebrate the 49th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots I am reminded of the progress we’ve seen…

Illinois State law reads:

“To secure for all individuals within Illinois the freedom from discrimination against any individual because of his or her race, color, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, age, order of protection status, marital status, physical or mental disability, military status, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or unfavorable discharge from military service in connection with employment, real estate transactions, access to financial credit, and the availability of public accommodations.”

When I moved to Chicago in the fall of 2016, knowing that my sexual orientation couldn’t be used against me by potential employers was a welcome protection. I hadn’t necessarily ever been discriminated against at work, but having the legal protection there was comforting.

As I started working at NeonCRM, I discovered there was something unique about this team. Here, people are celebrated for their diversity!

Before working at NeonCRM, I wasn’t ready to admit publicly that I was gay. Past co-workers and friends knew, but I had never been to a Pride Celebration, or even discussed my sexual orientation with a boss or superior.

But at NeonCRM, I saw my own manager be comfortable discussing his date with another man — and I celebrated a co-workers engagement to her now-wife. It was a totally new experience for me! Working in this inclusive environment has helped me become more comfortable with sharing publicly or posting on social media about my sexual orientation.

The company culture at NeonCRM is about elevating the law and truly celebrating the beauty of our diversity! This celebration of diversity even extends to our business practices: as a company, we don’t allow our software to be used for any cause that will hurt or harm any person or group. Our policy ensures we don’t promote things like hate speech or conversion therapy, which reinforces our company culture and makes me proud to be part of this team.

Pair this with our amazing team, who choose to celebrate National Pride Month with cookouts, t-shirts, and client spotlights like Wyoming Equality — suddenly work becomes a place you thoroughly enjoy being at.

It’s been almost 2 years since starting at NeonCRM, but I can honestly say that working here has been about so much more than receiving a paycheck. The relationships I’ve built here, along with the company culture, have allowed me to be comfortable in who I am.

In many ways, NeonCRM has taught me more about Pride and acceptance than any one person!
